Brief Explanation

The Crisis Connection Program provides hospital diversion care as well as hospital step down care to adolescents 10yrs-18yrs who may be experiencing a crisis with family members or self that requires an alternate level of care. We provide a structured therapeutic day for the clients with an emphasis on family assessment. When the client enters the program we begin with immediate individual assessments with our therapist and within 24 hours meet with the family to begin family assessment. Length of stay depends on the individual needs of the client and their family; generally our clients stay for 3 to 5 days but can stay longer based on their treatment needs. Assessments of the clients’ treatment needs are made on a daily basis by the treatment team.

Children without private insurance at emergency rooms generally are referred to community mental health clinics that put them in contact with an emergency service worker. The emergency service worker is primarily the person who would call CCP. The behavioral health organization (BHO) is the primary payer.

We are willing to work with other referral sources and payers.

Beacon Youth and Family Center has expanded their services to include an innovative program serving kids who need immediate mental health treatment, but who do not require hospitalization. In coordination with behavioral health organizations and community mental health clinics, Beacon Center has designed a program, which provides a level of care not currently available in the Denver area.

When a family takes a child to the emergency room because of a behavioral or mental health crisis, the primary option in the past was hospitalization. But hospitalization often does not address the young person’s individual needs, it does not involve the family from which the issues may have originated and it is very expensive.

Beacon Center’s Crisis Connection Program addresses the needs of both the child and the family directly. Through Crisis Connection, when a family brings a child to the emergency room because of a behavioral crisis, a community mental health clinic will contact Beacon Center. Staff will be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day to meet the child and family at the hospital and bring the child to our residential facility to have a safe place to sleep and a hot meal. Meanwhile, Beacon Center staff make an appointment to meet with the family the next day when a clinical assessment of both the child and family is completed. Within three to five days, child and family are reunited with a long-term, out-patient plan. Intensive, individualized therapy starts immediately and continues over the next few months.

Crisis Connection Program is unique–the family is engaged immediately, while the crisis is fresh in their minds and they are open and willing to undergo therapy. Crisis Connection staff are available every day, any time of day to respond to children in need and families in crisis. Finally, Crisis Connection is the first step in a long-term treatment plan that serves as the starting point to improving lives.

For further information about Crisis Connection Program, please feel free to contact Michael Guthrie at mguthrie@beaconcenter.org

Inside a packed ballroom feeling much more like 1940’s Morocco than the Hyatt DTC, the attendees of the Cherish the Children’s annual Gala came together in a strong show of support for the organization. The highlights of the night, chaired by Nancy Sevo and Loretta Kelce, included the awarding of the Golden Cherub Award to longtime and steadfast supporters, Pat and Annabel Bowl, the awarding of the Corporate Community Service Award to High Sierra Energy LP, some very unique live auction items, the Jerry Barnett Band, and the honoring of the late director of the Beacon Center and the establishment of the Anne Robinson Fund.

As an agency we are so thankful and touched each year by the support of each and every single person and this year’s Gala was particularly special to the Beacon Youth and Family Center. Without the support of the Cherish the Children Guild and every donor Beacon could not provide the level of support to youth and their families that we currently do and we could not continue to pave the way into a new and innovative future for the mental health care of children in Denver.

Please follow the links to the wonderful articles in the Denver Post:

“There are times you just know someone is a good guy; and those are the vibes you get from being around Lydell,” Nancy Kootz says in her article “Have you Met?” on Blacktie Colorado about Lydell Peterson, marketing and advertising professional, Board Member of the Beacon Youth and Family Center, and Co-chair of Beacon’s new Young Professionals’ Group.

Beacon Center Executive Director Michael Guthrie is quoted as saying “’As a board member, Lydell is a significant part of our success in many areas, and it is hard to imagine that any nonprofit has a board member who is so committed to the organization he supports. His role with us is huge, and we benefit even more from the fact that Lydell is a warm, friendly, engaging and enjoyable person. He’s great for Beacon Center and is a pleasure to work with. One caution, though: He’s ours, and I won’t willingly share him.’ How about that for an endorsement!” (Koontz).

Lydell, Beacon is so appreciate of all the amazing work you have done for the non-profit and we are excited about the prospects in your future.

April 8, 2010 * 24K Lotus Club * 1416 Market Street, 2nd Floor, Denver, CO 8020

The first ever Beacon Center Young Professionals event, Destination: Marrakech, stirred up excitement for Beacon Youth and Family Center and worked to introduce the organization to a new group of interested and rising philanthropists in the Denver area. Organized by Anne Donley and Lydell Peterson (with the help of the YP committee) the evening saw a wide variety of young professionals (from teachers to MBAs) and really served as a gateway to both Beacon and the Casablanca Gala.

Mainly marketed through Facebook and shrouded in mystery until the day before, the intrigue of Marrakech brought a huge crowd to 24K, one of Denver’s hottest Downtown clubs. The evening really served as a teaser for the May 15th Casablanca Gala and introduced the first ever YP ticket price of $150.

Beacon Youth and Family Center and the YP committee owes many thanks to the sponsors of the night: Lotus Clubs, Denver Magazine, and Jill Hodges (who designed the amazing invitations).

We also had some fabulous press coverage there so check out the amazing pictures and articles!
